2003 Beerdrinker of the year
Winner's Resume Ray L. McCoy Ray on Beer Philosophy What is your favorite beer? One question that most dedicated beerdrinkers dread. It may be the one in my hand. It could be the next one. I enjoy many great beers, but the deciding factor in that ominous question is the company I share them with. In the words of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, "Good people drink good beer". Ray on Recent Beeriness There are a few beer events that I have been fortunate enough to attend in the past year. Ray on General Beeriness
Ray on Travel Life's a journey. Pack a cooler. As evidenced by other areas of this resume, I have had the opportunity to cover quite a bit of territory in the pursuit of beer. This is no accident. Beer is always a major consideration in my travel plans. I have no professional ties to the brewing industry. It is just my idea of a great vacation. Ray on Homebrewing Homebrewing is my way to gain a better appreciation for what goes into a good beer. Not just the ingredients, but the design of the beer, each step of the brewing process, dedication, and attention to detail necessary to make a consistent quality product. Homebrewing is certainly not cost effective for me, but there is no way to get a better appreciation for the art. Since building a half-barrel home brewery, christened " Backstage Brewing Company ", over a year ago I have been providing homebrewed beer for opening night cast and crew parties and for after volunteer shop-calls at the local community theatre. So far I have donated over 70 gallons of homebrew. Proceeds from the sale of "Backstage" merchandise are donated to the theatre for shop equipment. The first equipment purchase was a refrigerator and conversion hardware to put two beers on tap. Ray on Statistics In the past year, I collected labels from 200 new bottled beers from 17 states and 18 foreign countries. In addition, I sampled over 60 beers in 16 new brewpubs or breweries. There have also been numerous other new beers from repeat brewpub visits that are not included in these numbers. Also missing are the hundreds of beers sampled at beer festivals and pubs. In total, I have visited 248 breweries and brewpubs in 25 states and 6 foreign countries. Ray on Collecting I consider myself an accumulator rather than a collector. With a few exceptions, what I have accumulated is from breweries, brewpubs, festivals, or beer friendly bars that I have visited or had beers from. Of the hundreds of beer glasses in the cabinet or on display around the house, only a couple that were gifts have not been christened with the correct beer. Basically, if I don't drink it, it doesn't count. Some of the items I have accumulated are:
Ray on Memberships Join like minded souls who share an appreciation for beer. Local, national, and international memberships include:
Ray on Periodicals In the ever changing world of beer, it is tough to keep up. Some references readily available from the mailbox include:
Ray on Literature A library tells much about the owner. My library includes masterpieces by such noted authors as Stephen Beaumont, Alan D. Eames, Fred Eckardt, Michael Jackson, Randy Mosher, Charlie Papazian, Roger Protz, and James D. Robertson. There are also videos including the Video Guide to Beer and Ale, The Breweries of Merchant du Vin, and the Michael Jackson Beer Hunter series. The majority of the cook books in the kitchen include either brewpub recipes or recipes made using beer (in the dish, not the chef.) There is also a comedy section with 99 Ways to Open a Beer Bottle Without a Bottle Opener, Dirty Jokes and Beer, and 101 Ideas for Homebrew Fun. There are many more, but this resume is limited to three pages. Ray on Particulars Home Brewpub: Liberty Steak House and Brewery, High Point , North Carolina . T-Shirt Size: Extra Large.
